Not all dark modes are kind to your eyes. Here's what the strain really comes from, why white-on-black overshoots, and how to make night reading genuinely comfortable.

Why bright pages strain your eyes at night

Eye strain at night is mostly a brightness mismatch. In a dark room, a white page is a lamp: your eyes keep re-adjusting between the glowing rectangle and the dim surroundings, dozens of times a minute. Your pupils, the muscles around them, and eventually your head all pay for it.

That's why dark mode feels like instant relief — it removes the mismatch. But the details matter more than the label.

White-on-black overshoots: halation

The obvious dark mode — pure white text on pure black — introduces its own problem. Bright strokes on a very dark field appear to bleed or halo, an effect called halation. The eye's lens scatters the light from the bright letters, so crisp text looks slightly foggy, and you unconsciously strain to refocus.

If you have astigmatism — roughly a third of people do, often undiagnosed — this scattering is worse, and white-on-black text can smear into a glowing mess. Many people who swear they “hate dark mode” have only ever met this harsh version of it.

The comfortable middle: grey on near-black

The sweet spot for long night reading is light grey text on a near-black background — around 80–85% brightness for the text, a soft charcoal for the page. Contrast stays high enough for sharp reading, but the letters stop glowing. Halation mostly disappears, and the page feels calm instead of theatrical.

An honest word about blue light

So the honest advice is boring but effective: at night, dim the screen, darken and warm the theme, and let the session feel like reading by lamplight. Your eyes aren't being poisoned — they're just asking for less light, later.
